On Monday, April 20, President Barack Obama signed a federal disaster declaration for the state of Georgia in reference to the severe winter storm experienced February 15-17. Forsyth County is one of 15 counties included in the declaration.
This declaration means that Forsyth County is eligible to receive federal funds to help offset 75 percent of eligible costs of debris removal, emergency protective measures, and the repair or replacement for disaster-related damages, as determined by FEMA.
In the coming weeks, Forsyth County will be assigned a project manager who will work with the county to determine eligibility of expenses for reimbursement. The Forsyth County Emergency Management Agency (EMA) will compile all needed records which will then be reviewed by FEMA to determine eligibility for funding.
“Forsyth County will work diligently to compile complete documentation for the FEMA review in an effort to obtain the maximum benefit for FEMA funding,” said Fire Chief and EMA Director Danny Bowman.
This disaster declaration also makes Forsyth County eligible to apply for assistance under the Hazard Mitigation Grant Program, which provides assistance to state and local governments and certain private nonprofit organizations for actions taken to prevent or reduce long-term risk to life and property from natural hazards.
