Keep Forsyth County Beautiful (KFCB) will host several workshops to demonstrate how we can help protect local waterways through the Adopt-A-Stream program.
The Adopt-A-Stream program informs citizens on how to monitor local water quality while advising on the most effective ways to protect local water resources.
Everyone is encouraged to attend two different free workshops, suitable for ages third grade and up. The two workshops will cover three separate certifications (macroinvertebrate, chemical and bacterial). Upon completion of the workshops, attendees will be presented a certificate from Georgia Adopt-A-Stream for each certification completed. The certification allows you to report water quality data for the Adopt-A-Stream program anywhere in the state of Georgia.
The first workshop is Macroinvertebrate Assessment. This workshop will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, June 6 and Saturday, August 8 at the Central Park Recreation Center; and Saturday, October 3 at Cumming City Hall. During the Macroinvertebrate Assessment Workshop, attendees will learn how to collect, identify and count stream insects in order to assess the stream’s quality.
The second workshop is Chemical and Bacterial Certification. This workshop will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, June 13 and Saturday, August 15 at Central Park Recreation Center; and Saturday, October 10 at Cumming City Hall. The Chemical and Bacterial Certification Workshop will educate attendees on how to perform basic chemical and bacterial sampling on local streams.
“The Adopt-A-Stream workshops are a fun way to raise awareness of how crucial local water quality is to the environment,” KFCB Community Outreach Specialist Kevin Smith said. “The Adopt-A-Stream program provides firsthand experience in monitoring these valuable water resources.”
