Cumming, Ga. – Georgia DOT announces a traffic shift will happen sooner than planned in Cumming.
Crews will continue working overnight this week and will shift State Route 9 traffic overnight Saturday, July 19 to the new lanes on the State Route 9 at State Route 141/Bethelview Road intersection improvement project. The shift was planned to occur overnight Sunday, July 20.
“Crews are paving nightly this week, working toward shifting traffic on SR 9 overnight this Saturday, 20th. One day sooner than expected. Sunday morning State Route 9 will be in its final location and open up both lanes in each direction for SR 9 traffic. It will also open up all the turning lanes from SR 9 onto SR 141 towards SR 400 vastly improving traffic flow in the area! Crews still have to build up the base and then pave before opening the additional lanes on 141,” said DOT District Engineer, Bayne Smith.
This $5 million construction project was awarded to C.W. Matthews Contractor, of Marietta, Georgia. The project will reconstruct the existing intersection of State Route 141/Bethelview Road and State Route 9 creating two through lanes, two left turning lanes and a right turning lane for each leg of the intersection.
The project also upgrades the traffic signal equipment and constructs sidewalks. The project is on schedule for its completion date of July 29, 2014.
Overnight and intermittent lane closures will likely occur outside of peak travel times as crews finish this project.
