The town of Orvieto is in Umbria, located between Rome and Florence, Italy. It is home to Orvieto Classico, one of the better known Italian white wines, and a personal favorite of mine. I have enjoyed The Orvieto Classico from Ruffino for a long time, and the 2013 vintage is the best in the last few years. It is a perfect choice for antipasto or light seafood fare.
It is straw yellow in color, and the nose is like a bouquet of fresh picked wild flowers from the meadow. It is fresh and clean, with the flowery bouquet followed by solid apple and tropical fruit flavors underscored by a fragrant citrus presence. The finish is crisp and begs for another sip. The alcohol content is 12%.
We enjoyed the Orvieto with a delightful scallop dish prepared by the “Chardonnay Queen”, and as stated earlier, it would make an excellent companion for antipasto as well. I for one, would enjoy just sipping it out on the back porch. I guess that makes it a Norm’s Choice for a “Back Porch Sipper”. Norm’s score is 90.
