New program combines academies with Winter Competitive League
Forsyth County Parks and Recreation is offering youth basketball players more opportunities to hone their skills on the court while preparing to play at the next level. A new three-year program combines the Spring and Fall Basketball Academies with the county’s new Winter Competitive League to offer youth athletes the chance to discover their talents on the court.
Registration for the Fall Basketball Academy is underway and will continue through September 3 for ages 5-12. The classes will be held from September 9 to October 28 at the Central Park Recreation Center on Sunday afternoons at age-specific times. The cost is $125 for county residents.
Registrations will be taken at the county’s three recreation centers, located at Central Park, Fowler Park and Old Atlanta Park Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Registration will also be accepted via fax, mail and online at www.forsythco.com.
Players may start the eight-week academies in the spring or the fall. The first academy year will focus on learning the fundamentals of basketball while years two and three hone those skills into team play with 3-on-3 competitions. At the conclusion of their third year, players will receive a certificate for his or her age group signifying a status of “Got Game.”
The goal of the academies is to provide players a solid foundation of skills before they play in the Winter Competitive League.
“We will be helping these players learn the fundamentals of the game before heading into the competitive play,” said Parks and Recreation Director Jerry Kinsey. “If a child starts in the academies at a young age and moves on to play in the competitive league, they will have valuable experience to advance and play at the next level. One of our goals as a Parks and Recreation Department is to help children have fun and discover what they are capable of accomplishing.”
