On July 31st Republican voters will have the opportunity to take the first step toward making Georgia the first state to grant full human rights protection to all innocent life, from the preborn to the elderly and infirm.
I strongly urge all prolife supporters to vote in the Republican Primary and vote “yes” on the Constitutional Question.
Specifically, they will be asked if they approve adopting a state constitutional amendment that would grant the “paramount right to live” to all human beings from their earliest biological beginning until natural death.
While passage of this question is not binding, we need a strong showing to send a powerful message to elected officials that Georgians stand for life.
Georgia Right to Life believes such a showing will encourage the State Legislature to approve placing this question before all the voters.
Ultimately adopting such an amendment could make Georgia the first state to say that all persons, regardless of age, are sacred and deserve protection.
As for abortion, it would put an end to the carnage that has resulted in the death of 1.5 million innocent children in the state since the Roe v Wade decision in 1973. Nationwide, the total is a staggering 56 million.
Concerning the elderly and infirm, it would ensure that those who don’t believe we can afford to care for them will not prevail.
We need to affirm that the “unalienable” right to life—guaranteed in our Declaration of Independence—is alive and well in Georgia. If you don’t have the right to life, any other right is moot.
America is at a crossroad concerning respect for the sanctity of life. The tide is turning. Recent polls reveal that a majority of Americans no longer support abortion on demand.
And in Europe, the Vatican recently called for European Union members to adopt a similar amendment.
At the same time, the elderly and infirm are waking up to the fact that there is a growing movement to treat them with the same disregard that abortionists have for the preborn.
Opponents will focus on the abortion aspect of the proposal and attempt to label this is another example of the “war on women” and a violation of their civil rights. Nothing could be further from the truth.
The real war on women was recently on full display when abortion supporters in Congress defeated a bill that would ban sex selection abortions, which overwhelmingly target baby girls.
This proposal is about respecting all life. Any society that claims to be civil can’t take it upon itself to decide which innocent beings live and who die. When humans play God instead of following God, everyone suffers.
As for critics, such an amendment would not ban all contraceptives, would not deny women essential health care, would no prohibit in-vitro fertilization and would not prohibit abortions to save the life of the mother.
I encourage all those who value the precious gift of life to vote “yes” for the constitutional amendment.
