Cherokee Sheriff’s Office Warns of Phone Scam

According to the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office, at least three citizens have reported receiving  phone calls from a male claiming to be with the Cherokee Sheriff’s Office advising the person that they have missed jury duty and there is currently an active warrant out for their arrest.

The caller further explains that if they want to pay the warrant off and avoid arrest they can go and purchase a pre-paid credit card in the amount of $1,686.00 and meet the caller at a particular location.

The caller is providing an address of an actual county building in Canton.

None of the “would be” victims have agreed to purchase the card or meet the caller. This is a scam. The Cherokee Sheriff’s Office DOES NOT call citizens an elicit money FOR ANY REASON. If anyone receives a similar call they should simply hang up and call 911.
