Kenneth Mercer, 50, has been charged with four counts of aggravated assault against a peace officer, with additional charges pending, following a standoff at his home Thursday.

Mercer was brandishing a shotgun outside his residence in the 8300 block of Swiss Air Road and pointed his weapon at deputies as they arrived, said Forsyth Sheriff’s Office spokesperson, Robin Regan. “Mercer ignored many commands from deputies to put his weapon down,” Regan said.

Evacuating nearby homes, deputies set up a perimeter and responded while SWAT and the Crisis Negotiation Team moved into place. Negotiators quickly began communication while SWAT members moved into position utilizing the armored personnel carrier to safely approach Mercer.

Mercer was taken into custody by SWAT members without serious incident and removed to an area hospital before being transported to the Forsyth County Detention Center.

“Evidence obtained on scene confirmed that although Mercer had fired a weapon, he did not shoot at deputies,” said Ragan.
